How do I add a transaction from a bank SMS?

Moneon recognizes the amount, currency and date in a bank SMS and fills them into a new transaction. On iPhone you copy the SMS; on Android Moneon reads SMS from the banks you choose. SMS recognition is part of Premium.

On iPhone

  1. Make sure recognition is on: Settings → “Text message banking” → “Text message recognition”.
  2. Copy the text of the SMS from your bank. Copied text of a banking app notification works too.
  3. Open Moneon and tap plus. If your iPhone asks for permission to paste from the clipboard, allow it.
  4. A suggestion with the amount from the SMS appears on the screen. Tap it: Moneon fills in the amount, currency and date. If the SMS has no date, today’s date stays.

Once the SMS is recognized, Moneon clears the clipboard.

On Android

  1. Open Settings → “SMS from bank”, turn on “SMS recognition” and give Moneon access to SMS.
  2. Tap “Add SMS source” and select the conversations with your banks. Moneon reads only SMS from the senders you selected.
  3. When a new SMS arrives from these banks, Moneon recognizes it on its own. A “Transactions from SMS” card appears on the Summary. Open it, tap a transaction, check the details and tap “Add”. To add all transactions at once, tap “Add all”.

Moneon recognizes SMS that arrive after you turn recognition on. It does not go through older SMS in the conversation.

The category is suggested. If this wallet has a similar SMS transaction with a category, Moneon may suggest that category. You can change the category before saving.

If an SMS was not recognized

Banks format their SMS differently, and Moneon does not understand every format: recognition quality depends on the bank and the message format.

On Android, Moneon sees only SMS; it does not read banking app notifications. If your bank sends transactions only as notifications, turn on SMS alerts at the bank or add those expenses manually.

Send us the SMS that was not recognized, so we can teach Moneon its format. On iPhone, copy the SMS, open Settings → “Text message banking” and tap “Report a problem”: an email with the SMS text opens. On Android, with recognition turned on, tap “Report a problem” on the same screen, choose “Error” and paste the SMS text. You can also write to support@moneon.co. You may hide the card number before sending. You can hide the balance amount too, but please keep its label (such as “balance”) and the currency: they show which number Moneon treated as the transaction amount.

Without Premium, SMS recognition does not turn on: Moneon offers to get Premium. Recording expenses and income manually is free.
